Copenhagen - Aarhus
Copenhagen - Aarhus
With so many of its islands connected by ferries, tunnels, and bridges, planning a bicycle trip across Denmark can be an exciting adventure in and of itself. On the journey from Copenhagen to Aarhus alone, cyclists have a choice of various routes; for a short, 2-3 day (200km) trip, cyclists can ride through north Zealand and take a ferry headed directly to Aarhus, passing the city of Roskilde and enjoying the sight of the North Sea. For a 4-8 day (400km) journey, cyclists can venture as south as Maribo, Lolland, before heading north-west through the city of Odense and north again towards Aarhus, crossing the islands of Zealand, Falster, Lolland, Jutland, and others along the way. Whether you plan your own route or follow one that has been well-travelled by others before, the journey from Copenhagen to Aarhus is bound to offer you a unique insight into the everyday life of Danish culture.
To the west of Copenhagen, just a 50km bike ride away, the city of Roskilde is booming with culture and history. Famous for its annual and world-renown Roskilde Festival, the city is also home to RAGNAROCK Museum, where visitors can enjoy learning about the history of Danish music and youth culture or enjoy lectures, concerts, and exhibitions all throughout the year. At Roskilde Domkirke, a beautiful cathedral located in the heart of the city where 39 Kings and Queens of Denmark are buried, visitors can learn about Danish history and heritage. At the harbour, the Viking Ship Museum offers lectures on the history and lives of the vikings, guided tours, and even workshops on shipbuilding where you can learn how people built and sailed ships a thousand years ago.
On the southern route, cyclists can explore more of Denmark's countryside, riding bicycle lanes that pass through small villages and green farmlands and across astonishing bridges that connect various islands to the mainland. Egeskov Castle, a breathtaking water castle surrounded by moats and vast gardens, marks the halfway point on the journey from Copenhagen to Aarhus and is well worth a day trip to explore its incredible exhibitions and to take part in its events and activities, both indoors and outside. In the city of Odense, just 30km further on, visitors can enjoy a break at cosy cafes, bars, and restaurants along the cobblestone streets that wind through the city center, or explore various landmarks, parks, and museums in the center, including St. Canute's Cathedral and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen.
As the second largest city in Denmark and the geographical center of the country, Aarhus acts as a core for Danish culture: from its colourful, modern ARoS art museum to its historical, archaeological Moesgaard museum, there seems to be activities fit for everyone. Explore the stunning old town or take a long walk through Den Gamle By, a unique open-air museum that recreates life in the 19th and 20th century down to the finest detail, with architectural buildings preserved from those eras. Teeming with vibrant culture and rich history, the city of Aarhus is a wonderful destination to end this cycling journey.
