Copenhagen - Hamburg

Stretching over a distance of 350km, the journey from Copenhagen to Hamburg by bike is a wonderful experience even for novice travellers. Many cyclists are astonished to see just how quickly the cycle lanes in Denmark's capital city transform into quiet country roads that follow the coastline south, offering beautiful spots to take a break at the seaside and forests alike. The ARKEN Museum of Modern Art offers a plethora of exhibitions in the heart of Ishøj, a stone's throw away from the harbour. In the seaport city of Køge, cyclists can take a break by lunchtime to wander through the picturesque gardens of Valloe Castle, partake in whisky tasting at Braunstein, or feel larger than life by visiting the miniature, model village of Kjøge Mini-by.
The journey further south gives cyclists a view of Denmark's quiet countryside, where hamlets and small villages are nestled between rolling hills and green farmlands. The old ferry town of Vordingborg is rich with history; travellers can learn about Denmark's past by taking a guided tour or listen to audio guides as they explore Vordingborg castle. The Goose tower, named after the golden goose perched on top of the tower's spire, serves as the symbol of the city of Vordingborg and stands amongst castle ruins dating back as far as 1175. Carrying on further south, the bike paths lead cyclists to Masnedø island and over Storstrøm Bridge, where you can enjoy the sight of the ocean stretching out for miles.
In the town of Maribo, cyclists can travel back in time at the open-air museum, where visitors are encouraged to play games and explore a recreation of life in Scandinavia in the 1700s. Maribo Domkirke stands tall by the lakes and amongst a public park. Close to Maribo is the largest wildlife park in all of northern Europe, the Knuthenborg Safari Park, which is the home of zebras, rhinoceroses, giraffes, and where you can even learn about the lives of dinosaurs that walked the earth thousands of years ago. At the southernmost point of Denmark, ferries cross the Fehmarn Belt, where cyclists can enjoy a warm lunch, a cold beverage, and a sense of freedom in the open sea as the coast of Germany become ever-nearer.

On the last stretch of this journey, cyclists can choose between heading towards Weißenhäuser Strand to to feel its soft sands and stop by the Plöner Lake to marvel at the beauty of the German countryside, or take the southern route that passes through the city of Lübeck, where you can explore the characteristic green copper roofs and fine brickwork of Lübeck Old Town, where castles, cathedrals and historical streets greet you warmly. To finish off the journey, the city of Hamburg is bustling with life; as the "Venice of the north" and the home to one of the biggest harbours in Europe, there's no better place to find a scenic spot to drink a cold beer and celebrate the end of a beautiful journey.
